Host: Matt Carlton has been the Golf Course Superintendent for the past 4 ½ years. John Baum has been the Assistant Superintendent with Matt for 1 year. Country Club of the Highlands regrassed their greens in the fall of 2006. They stripped the existing greens, refloated the surfaces and sodded with an A-1/A-4 blend. The greens have been open since December of 2006. Part of the renovations included building a new USGA spec. putting green and practice area. Along with the golf course renovations a new clubhouse was constructed and recently opened. Matt will briefly discuss the renovations during the presentation portion of the meeting.
Presentation Information: John Moriarty is the owner of Brightleaf, LLC, a Virginia based agribusiness marketing company. John holds degrees in Agronomy from Virginia Tech and Forestry from Paul Smith's College of Arts and Sciences. He has over 25 year of experience in the green industry. John's presentation is titled "Common Sense Approach to Fertility". His presentation states fertility programs should consider the effects nitrogen has on the soil's C: N ratio. This fundamental tenant is important, widely discussed, but usually not practiced. Programs considering the interdependence between nitrogen and carbon will help turf managers and growers to reduce plant nutrient requirements, minimize leaching and runoff, increase tolerance to drought and heat stress, reduce plant disease causing pathogens and reduce plant protection chemical usage. The benefits of organic matter and the carbon it contains are well known. How to realize these benefits is not as well known so the presentation's message is long overdue. He will provide an easy to learn method of fertility that accounts for nitrogen and carbon. (www.brightleafllc.com)
